While trying to figure out the keyboard shortcut to complete a 'print screen' I accidently turned on some feature in Mac OS X Leopard where it has this dark rectangular box that highlights the current focus. I was wondering, how do you ever turn it off?

You accidentally activated Voice Over!

System Preferences/Universal Access/Seeing is where you can turn it off.

Re: Disabling "Highlight" box in Leopard

This happened to me once. I couldn't find any way to switch it off.

Then by chance one day I had the sound on, and discovered that the highlighted text is spoken. Problem was solved by switching off this facility. I think it was under 'Speech' in preferences.

Hope this works for you.
