Problem Mac Book Pro won't recognise Android Hotspot

My MacBook Pro early 2008 US - won't recognise my Android Phone Hotspot.
I previously had another Android, and it worked with that;
my husbands laptop - not a Mac - picks it up.

My MacBook will work in wifi.

I am not tech savvy

This could be semi-difficult to diagnose without having physical access to your devices. That said:

-What version of OS X is the MacBook Pro running?
-It could depend on how the Android phone hotspot is setup - unfortunately, I am not familiar with Android devices at all
-Does the hotspot Wi-Fi network show in the Wi-Fi icon in the menu bar?
