Pages won't respond

Macbook Pro, couple months old. I'm new to Apple products. I opened a Pages document on Moodle, tried to export it to a Word document, Pages froze. Any click results in the clunk that suggests there's something I'm supposed to do before I can close the window, but I can't see what I'm supposed to do. Tried to close down the Mac, but message says Pages is preventing it and I should close pages first. I can move the document around the screen. It just won't respond to any keyboard commands and will not close.

Just had to do the "command" "option" "delete" to close Pages and when I restarted, I was able to export the Pages doc to Word with no problem. No idea why it locked on me.
