My iMac (27-inch, Late 2012; 2.9 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5, 24 GB 1600 MHz DDR3) is running macOS Catalina Version 10.15.7, and is able to connect to hotel WiFi as well as xfinitywifi (unsecured). It will NOT connect to either 2.4 G or 5 G WiFi on my new Motorola MT7711 modem/router even though it is less than 3 feet from the router.

It is currently connected to the internet via a hard-wired ethernet LAN connection in my living room; however, I plan to use the the LAN line for a SMART TV and move the iMac into my den. The HP laptop connects wirelessly in the den with no problems.

The MT7711 router IS working as I have connected my HP windows 10 laptop to the 5 G network by entering the laptop MAC address into the MT7711 onboard application. I have entered my iMac MAC address into the same application, and I cannot connect to either my 2.4 G or 5 G wireless network after disconnecting the LAN line from the iMac.

Under Network, WiFi security is set to WPA2 Personal. My 2.4 G and 5 G networks have been entered manually. TCP/IP setting under IPv4 is "Using DHCP", and IPv6 is "Automatically". Renew DHCP Lease has been pressed multiple times without effect. DNS, WINS Servers, and 802.1X are left blank. Proxies has no protocol selected.; Bypass proxy settings for these Hosts & Domains is set to "*.local, 169.254/16". Hardware shows my MAC address xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx, Configure is set to "Automatically".

I've tried everything that I can think of, and am wondering if a network specialist can solve this problem. I don't believe it is an OS Catalina problem because it was connecting to hotel WiFi just fine only 12 days ago.

Thanks in advance!

Hello and welcome.

Yes, it should be compatible and be able to connect.
  • Are the date & time correct on the iMac?
  • Does it give you any specific error?
  • How is the Motorola setup for Wi-Fi security - WEP/WPA2/WPA3 - Personal/Enterprise?
  • What do you mean by "My 2.4 G and 5 G networks have been entered manually"?

Cory,

Thanks for responding.

The date and time are correct, showing year 2022.

Enclosed is an image of the error message. Running diagnostics fails to produce any results. The iMac is less than 3 feet from the router.

Security setup is WPA2.

All previously "memorized" networks were "wiped out", i.e. erased from memory using the (-) button in "Preferred Networks". The (+) button was used to enter the new ones manually to be certain there were no corrupted settings.

Hi,

Sorry for dropping the ball on this.

The next thing to try would be to delete the Wi-Fi network again AND delete any entries in Keychain access for the network. You can also power cycle the router.
