Anyway to transfer my files

I have an external hard drive. It worked on my mac at first. I was just plugging it in to transfer my files onto my mac but I didn't get every thing transferred. I went to go transfer again and now it's not showing up on my desktop. It shows up in disk utility though. I don't know what to do. I just want a few more folders of files. When I plug it into a pc it makes it really slow and just shows up as driver I but it won't open at all .
