iPhone to iMac picture transfer

Having considerable difficulty in moving pics from my iPhone to my iMac. The iMac wants me to "restore" my iPhone settings but I don't want to lose all the data I have on that phone. Is there an alternative method of transfer?

-Which version of iOS?
-Which version of OS X/macOS?
-Are you attempting to transfer them to a folder, or into the Photos app?
-What are the steps you are taking now?

Thanks for the reply, Cory. In order, 5S, iOS 12.1.2, mac OS 10.14.2, into the Photos app or the Photos file. I have followed the generic instructions found elsewhere online, and have consistently run into the issue of the iMac wanting me to "restore" my original phone settings. I am reluctant to do that as I do not want numbers and names erased nor any pictures that may get in the way. Am I being overly cautious here?

Not sure why you are getting a "restore" my original settings prompt.

-Are you using iCloud Photos?
-Have you tried these steps: Transfer photos and videos from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
