Updating iPhone and iPad from iMac

I own an iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2009) recently updated to El Capitan 10.11.6.
Whilst I was running Snow Leopard I could update Contacts, and other items to my iPhone 4 and iPad.
Since updating to El Capitan i am unable to do so.
When connected via iTunes, it will update certain items, but not Contacts, and several others.
I am regularly advised to update to Sierra 10.12.1, but am reluctant to do so until I get this issue sorted.
Advice please.

Hello and welcome.

-Which version of iOS are the iPhone 4 and iPad (which model) running?

It is probably due to the fact the the iOS devices are running an older version that isn't supported by El Cap or the new iCloud.

Hi Cory,

iPad - MD510B/A running iOS10.0.2

Hope this helps.

OK, thanks.

-You were previously syncing contacts and such via iTunes, instead of over the air with iCloud?
-Do you have an iCloud account? Is it signed in on all three devices?
-Part of the issue may be the iPhone 4 running iOS 7.1.2 - it may be too old.

I wouldn't worry about upgrading to Sierra yet...I agree to get this resolved first before considering that.

No worries...glad it's resolved.

It is much easier and automatic to use iCloud to sync things like contacts, calendars, etc.
