Unread mail dot not going away

Today my Mail app has a new behavior. When I read a message from the inbox, the unread marker (blue dot) does not go away. We recently went from Verizon mail to AOL mail because Verizon stopped verizon mail. I don't know if that's the

Of course I should have included that. I have a late 2013 27 iMac, with OS 10.12.4, and Safari Version 10.1 (12603.1.30.0.34).
