I scan once a month for viruses. This last time there were no viruses detected but the number of "unreadable files" jumped from about six to over six hundred. Should I be worried? The scan won't let me look at what the files are, so I can't tell if they look suspicious.
AVAST scan shows tons of "unreadable files."

No. So there's no way I can check up on what these files are. On the other hand, the computer works fine. So you think I'm just being paranoid?

Maybe try another program. Recently I had a Bit Coin-related virus on my MacBook Air (have no idea where it came from), and I used the freeware program Sophos (https://www.sophos.com/en-us/products/free-tools/sophos-antivirus-for-mac-home-edition.aspx) to get rid of it.

I wouldn't worry about it if your Mac is working normally and since it is stating they are unreadable, not infected files. I would guess that the files it is reporting are system and/or temporary cache/log files.
