transferring files in single-user mode

Okay, so after much wrangling with my system, I decided that it's time to just wipe my hard drive and reinstall OS X. But before I do that, I need to retrieve a few files. I have access to another drive with OS X installed on it. Ho do I transfer data from one drive to another in single user mode?

I can use either a firewire drive or an internal IDE drive.

Hi there,

well instead of transferring using the command line...why not pop the install DVD in...install OS X onto the external drive...then reboot holding down the option key...tell the Mac to boot from the External drive and then copy the files across that way...
