Time machine problem.. just keeps on "Preparing"

Hi, have. aproblem with my time machine for thelast few weeks.
when I start up the iMac in the morning I startup my Time machine disk and tell the menu bad to "Back up No"
i thne just keep on "Preparing" and this goes on all day with out ever haveing don any backups.

any fixes ? or ideas what may be wrong. ?

Me: 1012 iMac , High Sierra,32gb 1TB Hd, time machine disk i 3TB western digital.
