Hi, MacHelp Community!

Thank you for your superb service and continued support!

I have a 2017 iMac, which would sporadically crash. I keep it up-to-date using the latest MacOS (BigSur). I have also run disk utility's first aid from within the system. Since Sept. 2020, my iMac has been crashing frequently - once every few days, or a few times a day. I have already had to reinstall the MacOS (and my files), as well as run virus checks (Avira and Avast). I have also saved most of the reports generated by the computer upon crashing (with the latest one pasted below). Finally, I have run the disk utility using the MacOS Recovery instructions provided by Apple and the result is that there is no hardware problem/issues. So, having spent countless hours trying to have my computer working normally without crashes, I've decided to reach out to you and see if you might be able to figure out what the real issue is and how to solve it.

Thank you in advance for taking the time to help out!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,
Matt
(a Mac fan since 1993)

Hello and welcome.

At first glance, I would look at Avira and Avast, as they may not be compatible with Big Sur, or need an update/upgrade. Personally, I don't recommend running antivirus software, especially multiple applications, as it really isn't needed for macOS. If you do, it is best to disable any real-time/background scanning, as that has been known to cause slowness and crashing. Malware is the only real issue that Mac uses experience on occasion.

Try disabling the real-time scanning, or fully uninstall them temporarily to see if that resolves the issue.

Thank you for your guidance!

I had similar observations before and had not used any anti-virus software for more than 10 years. Nevertheless, the issue with the sporadic crashes appeared prior to installing the anti-virus apps. (Please note that I had downloaded the latest anti-virus applications directly from the developer.) Consequently, I have also removed them after your post and the crashing continued. Then, I installed Bitdefender, which also identified viruses and deleted them.

At this point, the crashing would continue occurring sporadically, though I have already upgraded to the latest OS, e.g. 11.2.3. The last couple of times, it happened after finishing running the disk utility - and then selecting shut down. The computer would initiate shut down and then restart with a crash and I'd get the following report (enclosed below).

panic(cpu 1 caller 0xffffff8003ebfbe6): initproc exited -- exit reason namespace 2 subcode 0x4 description: none
