2012 Macbook Pro Cover/Serial but Looks Like 2014 Guts? Confusing

Hello:

I THOUGHT I had a mid-2012 Macbook Pro 15" but when I took off the case to try replacing the hard drive... it looks more like a 2014 on the inside (attached) ?!?!?!?

I checked with serial number on the case and it also comes back as a 2012 model - so now I'm wondering if someone put the 2012 case onto the 2014 machine - is that possible? Here is the serial number on the case: C02J65VCDKQ2

Hi,

Yes, that does look like a 2014 in the photo and the serial is a 2012. I guess one could put an older case on a newer one, but there may be slight differences.

-When you startup and check About This Mac, is it the same serial number as on the case?
-Did you buy it new or used?
