Saving a photo jpeg WITH image visible

When I first download a photo, it sits on my desktop, (or in my Photos,) but the moment I open the file, edit it and save it with a name, it saves it back onto my desktop or file with no image showing, ust the generic JPEG icon.

This can be very annoying when I am working with a lot of photos. Any solution?
