Reconnect Time Machine

My Mac running Monterey was attached to a dedicated Time Machine. Cleaned out the Mac and reinstalled Monterey. Several moths along reconnectedcTime Machine as needed to retrieve some documents but it concerns me that if I follow the instructions I found online it may erase thecTime Machine disc. Any advice welcome please. Jen

If you do not format the Time Machine drive when you plug it in, it should ask you if you want to inherent the old backup, or start a new backup. Either way should not erase the old data.
