using external drive when imac failed, switched same drive to 13 in. laptop while repairs finished: new logic board and screen, switched drive back and all passwords under safari are gone,( back to 13 in. passwords still there)....... email is down on the new logic board and refuses to recognize working password ( works on the 13 in. ) also will not connect to time machine external disk
what is going on ????

Hello,

-Who did the repair?
-Did they reserialize the logic board - i.e. does it have a serial number and does it match what it was previously?
-Does your user password still work normally?

It may be because the logic board has no serial number or a different MAC address/UUID identifier.

C,
how goes the life?
apple service provider did the work, as for serial nos. have no idea but it seems that they dont match, more investigation points to this. The user password works but it is only a single digit, this computer has but one user. Had to redo the email account, working now, been reinstalling pass words as they come up....... no access to time machine is the big hurdle now is there a simple way to resolve this or is erase the only answer. Question: 1) can the service provider do something to prevent this on logic board installs 2) would changing os be advisable at this junction have 4 sierras to upgrade 2 separate drives and one partitioned drive......thanks

Pretty busy, but good. Hope you've been well.

Normally, an Apple Authorized Service Provider will reserialize the logic board when it is replaced to match your Mac's original serial number.

Time Machine may think it is a different Mac, so you can keep the Time Machine data there and it should start as a new backup on the same drive. Or, keep that drive and use a new one going forward - storage is pretty inexpensive these days. You should still be able to manually navigate the Time Machine backups in Finder, just not with the Time Machine app.

Maybe hold off on upgrades for now, until things are working and you have the proper backups?
