My mac book pro is slowing down

I have a mid 2009 mac book pro 13''
2.53 GHz Intel core 2 duo
4gb 1067 MHz DDR3

It works great except for the fact that it is running slower than it use to. I do not know why this is happening and I would like to be speedier. Please help me.
