Mail: messages stuck in Outbox

Emailing, all going per usual. Then several emails did *not* Send; instead, they moved to suddenly created Outbox. I opened Outbox, opened 1st message, clicked Send. Message did not Send. Rather, it moved to the bottom of the messages in Outbox (round & round we go). Help, please. --MacBook Pro, 10.4.11, Mail 2.1.3, internet via Verizon wireless broadband.
