Macbook pro can't see my backup disc

Hello,

I have been backing up to a WD 'My Passport' external drive, connected via the USB port (MacBook pro c. 2015, running Mojave), using Time Machine. Within the last couple of weeks my MacBook can no longer see the drive, though the light on the drive comes on, and there appears to be activity. Is this likely to be a (terminal) drive problem, and are there any diagnostics that be used?

I have a bad feeling that the WD has failed, first try a different USB cable, if still no luck and to prove that the drive has failed is it possible to connect it to a friends Mac.
