MacBook disk space

Hi,
I really hope someone can help me with this. I have a Mac running OS X 10.5.4. Whenever i delete things and empty the trash, it never shows that i have cleared any disk space. I am not getting qiute low and starting to worry. I've tried using the 'secure empty trash' but this is the same, makes no diference to the available disk space. Am i missing something?
