I have a 2014 MacBook Air
1.4 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5
4GB memory
250GB disk
running Big Sur

What can I do to upgrade to extend the useful life?

thanks

Hello,

That model MBA doesn't have any upgradeable components other than the SSD.

About the best you can do is keep enough free space available, keep third-party software up to date that is compatible with macOS Big Sur, and keep a current Time Machine or other backup of your data. At some point, you will start losing functionality in Internet browsing and software updates, and will have to purchase a newer Mac.

Hope that helps.

Replacing the old slow Hard disk to a ssd will make that Mac Air better than new well worth the upgrade as long as you do it yourself..
