Mac won't open any word processing app

Up until now, I've been using OpenOffice as my word processing app, but I've been having some issues getting it to open (it would freeze and need to be be force quit before the icon would even stop bouncing on the dock). I downloaded LibreOffice to see if that would work. Has the same problem. I've never had issues like this until yesterday, and it's a huge problem because I work on my laptop for my job. What do I do?

Try TextEdit, it should be in your Apps Folder. This will show if you have a wider problem.
