Inkjet4 quit unexpectedly

Running El Capitan 10.11.6 on an old iMac (early 2008). Have not been able to print and this comes up as an Apple problem, not a printer problem. Any suggestions on a fix?

-Did this work previously and recently stopped?
-Did it stop after a recent software/OS X upgrade/update?
-Which brand/model is the printer?

It's not necessarily and Apple problem, but more of a software incompatibility between the inkjet software and OS X El Capitan.

When trying to print, I get this message in the printer box: Stopped - 'filter' failed. That's when the 'Injet4 quit unexpectedly' pops up.

This link to the HP website shows there is updated firmware for that printer, released in Dec 2020:

HP OfficeJet Pro 6968 All-in-One Printer

That may help, as well as making sure you have the latest printer driver for El Capitan.
