iMovie won't quit

I have to force quit iMovie and I worry about that disrupting my files. It gets stuck on "Canceling background tasks". Any thoughts?

Hello,

-Which version of OS X/macOS?
-Which version of iMovie?
-When did the issue start?
-How much free space on your drive?
-How large is the iMovie Library in the Movies folder?

We'll see if we can narrow down the issue.

Thanks for replying Cory. Issue started about 2 weeks ago. When I open iMOvie it says I need to convert files to be more compatible with later versions. I say yes, convert. All seems well until I want to quit
