SOLVED IMac late 2019 running OS 10.14.6 cannot erase External 1TB HD

Following a prolonged Startup, error message "Unable to mount TimeMachine. Reformat HD A.S.A.P.".

This I attempted but above appeared. Can some advise me, please?

It looks like that disk is still assigned as a Time Machine drive. Are you able to remove that drive from the Time Machine preference? There is probably another process running to prevent you from unmounting it. Try again by rebooting into Safe Mode.

Thank you, Tony, that worked 'a treat'! TimeMachine is backing up, even as I type
