Quick survey/question.

I've got a new G4 iBook, operating on 10.4.5
Barely anything in iTunes or generally on the hard drive (it's 60 GB, 512 MB)

How long should it take to start up?

It's taking iTunes 40 SECONDS to open, which I find unacceptable.
It's a brand new machine.
What could be slowing it down - already!

How long is acceptable for you?

Hi susanj, and welcome.

It should not really take that long but I need to ask how much RAM in the system? If it is only 256 MB this could be part of your problem, especially as you are running Tiger.

Have you tried repairing permissions?

Hi Susan,

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------PowerBook G4 1.67GHZ, 1.5GB RAM, 90GB Hard Drive,

OS 10.4.5, iTunes version 6.04...only 300 items in iTunes !

Opens in under a second.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

iBook G3 500MHZ, 640MB RAM, 72GB Hard Drive,

OS 10.4.4, iTunes version 6.04...only 843 items in iTunes !

Opens in just under 3 seconds.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

These were both done with no other Apps open !

Certainly sounds as though there is something not quite right on your Mac...

As Kyomii suggests it may be worth trying to do a Repair Permissions

Try that and let us know how you get on...

My iBook is less than 2 weeks old! I think I'll take it back. Here are the specs:

1.42GHz PowerPC G4
512K L2 cache (at 1.42GHz)
512MB memory (DDR333 SDRAM)

I don't think I should have to seek Repair Permissions on such a new machine.
Do you?

Thanks for your help.

Hi Susan, as far as repairing permissions on a new machine, if you have updated the software for the latest fixes etc/ and or installed any software/done any saves then yes, it is worth repairing permissions, as this should be done before and after any software updates and/or installs to ensure smooth running :)

I will say though that this was only an idea and judging by the amount of RAM you have it certainly sounds like it could be a hardware issue - you are right to take it back.

Hi there,

You could try and create a new user account and try iTunes in that...if that is okay then the chances are its a software problem and not hardware...might save you lugging it back to the Apple Store !

But if you are in any doubt best take it back...I would of thought that they would just do an Archive and Install and then try it again...
