Help Macbook Pro connect to TV HDMI

I've got a 2006 MacBook Pro and just got the VGA cable and the Red and White phone jack cable I got them hooked up but it finds the orginal Desk top but none of the folders on the desk top and I can't get it to play a movie on the TV is there a app I need that I don't have? Thanks for any help you can give.
