External storage devices not working

My external storage devices (USB sticks, external hard drives) suddenly stopped working with my Mac. They worked 2-3 weeks ago. Now they don't show up on the desktop, in disk utility, or when I run diskutil list in Terminal. They only show up in the system report.

I've tried different ports, cables, etc. The storage devices work fine on other computers. My iPhone and USB mouse work fine in the computer's USB ports. I've tried turning it off and on again. I've tried resetting NVRAM and SMC. No, it's not the formatting -- I didn't change that since it last worked.

I have no idea what to do. I'm on the verge of just doing an erase and reinstall. It would be a huge pain in the ass and I'd lose data, but that's looking like it's the only way right now.

The computer is a 15 inch MacBook Pro running OS X El Capitan (10.11.4).

Hello and welcome.

-Which exact model MacBook Pro?
-Are the external drives desktop (AC powered) or portable (bus-powered) models?
-Are you running the MBP on battery or AC?
-Are your power adapter and battery genuine Apple or third-party replacements?
