Noob in the Soup: External Hard Drive Issues

I am trying to transfer mkv files from my work-issued macbook Pro OS Sierra that I have to return as I am starting a new job. I am trying to transfer mkv files to another mac via a seagate external hard drive.

I reformatted the hard drive to ex fat.

The files show up as mkv on the original drive but when I transfer them to the other mac they have changed to .exec files and the computer cannot read them. I have hundreds of film files I need to transfer. Can anyone help?

Can you try with the drive formatted to Mac OS extended?
I assume these are very big files.

Thanks for your response...They are mostly film files of 1-2GBs

and it IS just the mkv files. Avi files look fine...
