External speakers have disappeared

On my MacBook pro I have been listening through external speakers for some time. Now, for some reason, they aren't working. In going to System Preferences, Sound, I don't find them listed. It lists internal speakers and headphones only. I've rebooted a couple of times but no help. Any advice is appreciated.

Try this:

1. Shut down your machine.

2. Unplug the connector from the speakers.

3. Plug the speakers back in.

4. Start up your machine.

If that does not work, can you try and plug in the speakers to another "device", to see if they are working?
