External Sound Not Working

Odd problem - when connected to my TV, my iMac will output a video signal, but not an audio one.
When I check under system preferences > sound - there is nothing detected, but under 'displays', there is.
Could this be a problem with the HDMI cable I'm using, or a computer issue?

Hello,

-Which model Mac?
-Which version of OS X/macOS?
-Which brand is the Mini Display Port to HDMI adapter?
-Which brand/model is the TV?
-Are you just using it as a display, or playing video?

It could be a cable issue, but they don't fail very often. Many pre-2010 Macs don't support audio output via the Mini Display Port.

iMac.
Yosemite.
Tried various dedicated cables and also an HDMI-to-display port adapter.
Samsung TV.
Playing videos.
This did work once, but not anymore, it seems.
