External Mavericks on thumb drive

I want to take advantage of the speed of a thumb drive (or small SSD) by plugging it into my Mac Mini with a bootable version of Mavericks. I have tried this before and it runs fine but I have trouble accessing files that are stored on the internal and assorted external spinning drives. Do I have to change the sharing on those drives so that the externally hosted OS can access the files? Also, is there a reason to use a small SSD (in a USB module) instead of a USB 3.0 thumb drive.

Thanks in advance.

Have you checked "Ignore Ownership On This Volume" in the Get Info window for each ext drive?

No, i have not. I'll give that a try. Presumably I have to do that before starting with the external drive.

OK, I unchecked the Ingore Ownership box but the folders I want to access are still block as shown in attached file;
