Document Will No Longer Open

I got a macbook and moved a document I had typed up on my pc using microsoft word over. I continued working on it using Text File without any real trouble, but I still preferred the layout of word so I installed word on my mac and opened the document with word. I ended up not making any changes at the time and just closed the program without saving. The next time I tried to open it however I got the error "the document could not be opened. The file is not in the right format. The file might be corrupted, truncated, or in a different format than you expect." This happens every time I try to open it whether I use word or textfile. I have tried changing the ending of the document to .doc and .rft but to no avail. Is there anything I can do to correct this?
