Connecting mac mini to iMac

hey guys, trying to use my 2011 iMac as a screen for mac mini. have checked the o/s release, and it is compatible according to sources. Connected thunderbolt cable from mac mini to iMac when in target mode. The lightning bolt goes away when connected, but the thunderbolt symbol stays on the screen. Any ideas what is happening please? thanks, G
