Good day!

I was hoping that I could find some help here, am new to this forum.

The above device seems to work, but the HDD crashed and I replaced it with a new SSD (Samsung 850 EVO 500GB). At the moment, the temperature sensor cable is not terminated with a HDD temperature sensor.

I am trying to install High Sierra on this machine using a wired Apple keyboard, which does connect. However, during the installation process less and less keys work and when it gets to the High Sierra target disk selection, no keys work at all. I am not able to connect a Bluetooth mouse.

I have reset the SMC / PRAM but no change. I also tried to run ASD 3S138, but here none of the keys work correctly - in fact I need to press "Command-T" to start the test (which fails at the HDD temperature sensor.

Does anyone have an idea what is going on here? Happy to provide more info if needed.

Many thanks.

Cheers,
Claus.

Hello,

I have an iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2009) and replaced the HDD with the same exact SSD. You really need to have a working drive thermal sensor. I purchased this with my SSD and installed it:

OWC In-line Digital Thermal Sensor for iMac Late 2009 - Mid 2010 Hard Drive Upgrade

It sounds like there may be another connector not connected/seated properly, or even some possible ESD damage.

Are any of the fans spinning up to the max, or any errors/kernel panics?

Hi Cory

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

So I used the motherboard from the failed HDD to "simulate" the temperature sensor, which resolved the missing temperature sensor problem. Thanks for our support on this.

Running ASD now I get a Bluetooth Wake Error (or something like that) - I did not record the error, but can rerun the test if of use.

Then I installed High Sierra onto the new SSD (Samsung 850 EVO 500GB) using another machine and plugged it into the iMac, which worked. The iMac starts up and I can connect a PC keyboard and also a bluetooth mouse, both seem to work ok. But I now have problems with crashes - see below.

Any ideas?

Cheers,
Claus.

OK, thanks.

I believe that could be a RAM issue. Those iMacs camera with 2x2 GB RAM sticks. I see you have added 2x2 GB RAM sticks.

A couple more things to try:
-Try starting up in Safe Mode - hold the Shift key until you see the Apple logo. It will take much longer to startup, but see if it kernel panics.
-Try removing the non-Apple RAM that was added and see if it kernel panics.

If you can then startup without kernel panics, try the ASD again to see about the Bluetooth wake issue error.

Hi Cory!

Thanks for your support, very much appreciated.

So I managed to fix the iMac 2009. What I did not mention was that the display had some intermittent problems - sometimes the display was fine (when the iMac was warm) and other times there was some vertical banding. After installing the SSD I found these problems to get worse and the iMac would not start up at all. So I did a Graphics Card Bake (200°C - 9 min.) and the screen came back to normal, plus all other problems seem to be resolved as well. Note that I also removed and reseated a number of cables, could be that this might have been another issue.

I was surprised by this outcome as I previously had a iMac 2011 with a similar display issue, but here only the display was affected and the iMac worked fine otherwise.

Thanks!

C.
