I’ve got a 2008 (early?) 24” iMac, and I’ve just picked up a 27” display, I think it’s a Thunderbolt. The iMac has what looks like a mini DVI video out socket, the monitor looks like Thunderbolt- I’m guessing as I’ve never used thunderbolt previously. Been looking for an adapter, but haven’t found one. Any ideas? I’ve got photos.

No idea what the second lead from the display is, looks like a MacBook recharge cable.

hi,
Photo 1 back of iMac 2009? the last port on the right is the external display (L-R 1 & 2 are sound in and sound out, next 3 are USB2, the next 2, the Y looking ones is Firewire 400, the next is Ethernet, and last Display port.
Phot 2 is Display port male plug That should fit the last port on the iMac.
3 is mag-safe charger lead for a Mac portable, as is last photo
can't make out the 4, bit looks like uSV Mini.? bit don't quote me.

Info says early 2008 24”. From what I’ve been able to gather online the video out on the iMac is a mini DVI, none of the plugs out of the display fit so it needs an adaptor- the 27” has an adapter to later Thunderbolt by the looks, don’t know what the one before the adapter is but they both have Thunderbolt markings.

Bigger photos of the standard and adapter plugs from the display. Thunderbolts or USB-C?

Hello,

Your iMac (24-inch Early 2008) has 1 - Mini-DVI (DVI, VGA, Composite and S-video with adapter) video output

Sounds like you picked up one of the following Apple Displays:
  • LED Cinema Display (27-inch) - Mini DisplayPort video connector, USB, and MagSafe for charging MacBook computers
  • Apple Thunderbolt Display (27-inch) - Thunderbolt video connector and MagSafe for charging MacBook computers
Can you get the serial number for the iMac and display and get the exact name from this site: Check Your Service and Support Coverage and a photo of the back of the 27" display?

Unfortunately, I am not sure it would be possible to find an adapter or adapters to connect either of those Apple displays to the Mini-DVI port on the 2008 iMac.

Can’t find model/serial # on the display. I suppose it’d be too easy if it’d hook up with the iMac via FireWire or USB. Tried Ethernet & no success as expected.
I’d have thought this was a relatively common issue, plenty of older Macs around with mini DVI ports etc that people would want to hook up a bigger monitor to?

the lightening strike symbol above the port also means it is a thunderbolt port... by as it also serves a mini Display plug, so you
both of these...

(My ebay is Australia so you will have to try or ebay for the country you are in)

regards

Sandy
