SOLVED Connecting two iMacs with thunderbolt cable

Can I connect a 2009 iMac with OS Sierra 10.12.6 to an iMac with OS Big Sur 11.6.1? I have purchased two thunderbolt cables and cannot get one of the iMacs to operate as a second screen. Thought maybe I had a bad cable, but two bad cables? Maybe I'm trying to connect two incompatible OS's??

Hello and welcome.

Use your iMac as a display with target display mode

I do know that Big Sur isn't compatible with target display mode, as both iMacs need to be running macOS 10.13.x High Sierra or earlier, and they can only be models from 2009-2014.
