computer screen goes black right after start-up

My desktop will turn on - and the screen will display the Apple icon as it's starting up (along with the turning grey circle), then screen goes blank and that's all she wrote. What does this mean and more importantly, HOW DO I FIX THAT?

Just a few questions for some clarity and basic direction for troubleshooting.

-Which model Mac...an iMac? How old is it?
-Which version of OS X?
-Did you recently have any slowness/freezing before this issue appeared?
-Have you had any power surges/outages? Do you have a surge protecter that your Mac is plugged into?
