Can't record gameplay

I'm trying to get a screen/audio recorder to record some games I'm playing.
so far I've tried
Quicktime
Apowersoft screen recorder
Screen Capture tool Pro

and a few others that I downloaded.

They all work until I launch my game (AOE 3). Then they just stop recording.

So if someone could just point me in the right direction here, I'd be grateful. Is it a setting I need to adjust in my game, or on the mac itself? Am I making a very simple and dumb mistake? Help please.
