Getting nearer ...
The System Preferences/Network wasn't the same in mine as in your movie. When I selected 'home' I couldn't get anything to do with Ethernet, only when I selected "Automatic". On the TCP/IP page, the IP address was 192.168.0.2 and I couldn't change it to 192.168.0.1. But I was able to "Apply Now".
I got into the Netgear Admin Page, ran Setup Wizard but couldn't get a connection. I got these:
(I tried to put pictures into the message, but they didn't seem to stick
: now I tried to use the "attach files" option)

No, 'home' only gave me a choice for "Configure IPv4" of "Using PPP" or "Manually".
I've just tried "Manually", putting in IP address 192.168.0.1, but Subnet Mask and Router are blank & have no boxes.

Hi Bob,

You may have got the numbers wrong from the Movie...

The DG834 comes preconfigured with the address 192.168.0.1

So your Mac needs to be 192.168.0.x where x is any number from 1 to 255 (We chose 10 in the movie !)

So you need to congure your network settings as per the movie...

Your IP Address = 192.168.0.10
Subnet Mask =255.255.255.0
Router Address =192.168.0.1
DNS Servers = 192.168.0.1

These numbers have to be exactly right...

You have to type them in yourself...

Are you with me ?

This has to be correct so that your Mac can 'talk' correctly to the DG834...

Bob,

to add picture inline like above you have to have "web disk space"...you did it correctly by adding as an attachment !

I have added them inline, because I took out the MAC Address. This is unique to your Modem, so best kept private.

Looking at the Netgear window above, shows me that you 'are' nearly there, there are just a couple of settings to change once we have the Broadband supplier info...

(I'll be back after 8pm, if I don't hear from you in the next 30 mins.)

Thanks Bob,

not what I'm after... ;-)

I'll have a look on their website later, unless you do it first.

We need:

Does your Internet connection require a login ?

What is your Broadband Username ?
Don't post it, just let me know that you know it !!

What is your Broadband Password ?
Don't post it, just let me know that you know it !!
You may not have one.

Then the important bits...

Encapsulation Method PPoA ? or PPoE ?

Multiplexing Method VC based or LLC ?

I know these are gobbledegook...

I will get them later tonight...

Bingo!

Thanks a lot Ric, especially for your patience and persistence.
The whole thing seemed perversely mystical, as if it's a question of finding the right magical spells and reciting them in exactly the right tone of voice while spinning widdershins.
Now for Tiger.
best wishes Bob

Glad it's working...

Change the default paswword in the Netgear admin box to your own !

And then go to the "Firewall Rules" in the Netgear Admin Menu and check that it says...

Inbound Services

Default Yes Any BLOCK always Any Any Never

if you see what I mean...

If it's like this then that means the firewall is on and blocking all incoming nasties !

Write all the settings down...just in case, you ever need them again !
