trying to activate broadband on LAN

hi - just been given a mac, powermac 9500/200 - second attempt in the mac world after a failed UMAX.
plugged in the lan, lights on, gone through the internet setup, no dice so far.
had a look on the net for trouble shooter to no avail.
cannot see a network devices utility to check the ip address etc.
also would be great if anyone could tell me how to 'flush' any old settings away.
maybe recommendation for a cheap starter guide would be most welcome.

Can you let us know what System Software the Mac is running ?

ooops ...
apologies.. its os 9.1
seems a nice os, i can see a lot of the detail more easily than i could in the UMAX which from memory (sic) was running 8.*
any road up the power management is years ahead.
