Trying to bring an A1312 back to life.. HELP!

Had a friend hand over a mid 2011 A1312. He said it worked when he replaced with new. With the cold and snow falling today in Minneapolis, MN I was thinking it was a good day to start it up and clean it up. No good!
When I start up I get the start tone and the Apple. Progress bar starts and after 30 seconds or so apple disappears and I get solid white/gray screen then after a minute or two it shuts down and restarts...again and again..
any advice?

Do you happen to know what Mac OS it has? It "sounds" like an issue with the internal drive. Maybe you could boot it to the (hidden) Recovery HD partition, and run Disk Utility form there. This link describes how to do that:

How are you making posts here? Are you using another Mac? If so, what exact model is it, and what OS are you running?
