runs for awhile then says 'macOS could not be installed on your computer'

'The path/System/Installation/Packages/OSInstall.mpkg appears to be missing or damaged.
Quite the installer to restart your computer and try again'

it gives me a restart button

It just repeats the same each time.

At this point I would just like to start with the old release, but when I quit the installer and shut the machine down, it restarts the installer again an fails.

What do I need to do?

thx

Hello and welcome.

-What is the exact model of the Mac?
-What is the current version of OS X you are running?
-Are you using the App Store installer for High Sierra?

it is a Mac Mini and it had Sierra loaded. I used the install option that pops up in the upper right portion of the screen when an update is available.
