After sleeping, keyboard and cursor do not respond

I just upgraded to El Capitan, and ever since then, if I let my Macbook sleep for the night or for more than a few hours, once I wake it up again, it shows a loading screen (and sometimes whirs like when you turn it on) and then goes to the login screen, but then I can't use the cursor or keyboard. Eventually it goes back to black, and I can press the power button to bring the login screen back up, but I still can't use the cursor or keyboard. Every time this happens I have to do a hard reset, and it's getting frustrating. Is there any fix for this?

Hello and welcome.

-Which model MacBook?
-Which version of OS X?

We'll start there with our troubleshooting.
