word + window problems

Hi,

Stupid newbie question.

Word has now crashed twice which if it continues will be a problem, but now when I open word I can see the desktop behind the word toolbars and menus which is really annoying. If I click there I of course I go to the desktop or finder.

I tried masking finder which didn't work and yet I'm sure there must be an easy solution???

Concerning the crash I had two large docs open which were created on windows and was copying text from one to the other any ideas ? Microsoft or mac prob ?

I'm using a new macbook.
