volume mac os x

hello, I have a question
I want to increase my volume ( intern speakers ) of my macbook os x (2009)
my volume is mediocre and it isn't as it should be...
in my system preferences I put the volume on maximum but it still is way to quiet
I hope there is somebody that knows a solution

I know this sounds a little left of field laurensdek but humour me ...

Launch GarageBand.app, then quit it ... this has been known to have solved many sound issues in the past and possibly into the future?
