Volume jumping up and down

Hi,

I have a MacBook Pro running 10.5.8.

The volume icon in the top right corner started randomly switching between volumes a few weeks ago. This didn't correlate with the actual sound coming out of the speakers, the icon just flashed between different levels of volume.

Now the volume itself is randomly vacillating--muting, full volume, mid-way. And pressing the volume keys (F9, F10, F11) sometimes won't have an impact.

Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this?
