SOLVED Using an external VGA monitor with a MacBook with a bad LCD

Not really a Mac person here (*nix, not Windoze) and I have this MacBook and I've plugged in an external monitor to be able to work with it until repaired or replaced. When its plugged in and I boot the mac the external screen looks like a normal startup until the login prompt is displayed. Then when I enter my login credentials and press Enter there is a progress bar that appears and it does nothing else. If I reboot this will repeat.

Is there any magic trick to request that the config/drivers for the logging in user be forced to generic or to search for a more compatible version?

-Which exact model is the MacBook?
-What version of OS X/macOS?
-You could try starting up in safe mode: Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac
-Were you having other issues before the LCD failure?
