I have an unwanted app that appears every time it turn on my mac mini (Sonoma 14.6.1). It appears to be a navigation bar of some sort that changes depending on the program I am working on at any given time. I click the "x" to close it, but if I then move to another application, it pops up again. I find it a nuisance and want to permantly delete it, but I simply cannot find it anywhere as a log in item or anything else.

The window is a black bar with 6 buttons. A tortoise on the left, a hare on the right. In between from left to right, fast backward, play, stop, fast forward.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can’t say that I’ve ever come across such a utility. Try first rebooting in Safe Mode. If it goes away, then it’s probably a login item. If you are able to identify it, you can purge it from your system using one of those app deletion apps. My choice is AppCleaner.app. It will remove the main app and all other related files. You should not simply trash just the app since you will end up with the clutter of those other files that came with it.

Thanks for the help Tony. Unfortunately that didn't work. To make matters worse, i can't even find the name of the app/extension. I've checked both Firefox and Safari and "extensions" in the System files. all to no avail.

You mean the beeping persisted even when booted in Safe Mode? If you know how to add users, try adding a new user, yourself, of course with another user nickname. Log out and log in from the new user. See if the beeping persists.

Hello and welcome,

Any chance you could take a screenshot or a photo of it and upload it here? We may be able to identify it and then know how to remove it.

Not a beeping sound, but a floating window as pictured here:

Sorry for the delay in replying to this.

The hovering window that you are seeing is the Spoken Content Controller.

You can either turn off Spoken Content completely by going to System Settings > Accessibility > Spoken Content and turn off Speak Selection.

Or you can leave Spoken content on and just hide the controller by going to System Settings > Accessibility > Spoken Content and click on the i in a circle to the right of Speak Selection and use the pulldown menu next to show controller and select Never to totally hide the controller, or Automatically to hide the controller and then show it when you are using text to speech.
