Unexpected buts of white noise

On my new MacBook Pro, When I power up, and whenever I access anything where there's an Audio signal, or an Audio Noise, Alert etc, I get a burst of white noise coming from the Right hand Speaker. It lasts around 30 secs or so and then stops. Weird thing is that if I plug in the headphones or speakers from the headphone output, it doesn't appear at all. Can anyone tell me what this is? It started to happen when I was using Entourage, and Final Cut Express HD. Clearly it's very distracting when using just the built in speakers.
Mac ~OS 10.4.11. 2.4 Ghz Inter Core 2 Duo 4 Gb Ram. Thanks, dave
